Robert Hochman

Robert (Rob) Hochman was appointed Vice-President and General Counsel for the University of Chicago on June 16, 2025. In that role, he oversees the Office of Legal Counsel and is responsible for providing legal and strategic advice to the members of the University community on the broad range of issues our work involves. Prior to joining the University, Rob was the co-head of the Supreme Court, Appellate, and Litigation Strategies practice at Sidley Austin LLP. He has represented Fortune 500 companies and others in high stakes litigation across a wide array of legal issues in federal and state appellate and supreme courts across the nation. He has also served on panels tracking trends at the U.S. Supreme Court, and taught law school courses at UChicago and elsewhere.

Rob began his career as a law clerk to Richard Posner of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and then also clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer at the U.S. Supreme Court. He holds a BA in Political Theory from Carleton College. And he graduated with Highest Honors from the University of Chicago Law School.
