Michael J. Hogan, the 18th president of the University of Illinois, has had a four-decade career in public higher education. He has served as president of the University of Connecticut, in senior administrative positions at The Ohio State University where he was executive dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences and at the University of Iowa where he was executive vice president, and as a faculty member at Miami University, University of Stony Brook, and the University of Texas.
A noted historian, he is the author or editor of nine books and numerous scholarly articles and essays. He served for 15 years as editor of Diplomatic History, an international journal of record for specialists in diplomacy and foreign affairs; served on the U.S. Department of State's Advisory Committee on Diplomatic Documentation; and has been a fellow at the Harry S. Truman Library Institute and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Hogan earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Northern Iowa, where he majored in English with minors in history and classics. Hogan received his master's and doctorate degrees in history at the University of Iowa.
